Internship

CONTINUAL MONITORING BY THE TEACHER EDUCATORS:

With the aim of maximizing the impact of school internships, the institution adopted several monitoring mechanisms. The Principal of the institution instructed the teacher educators, through circulars, to visit the students during their internship. The teaching practice coordinator prepared the duty allotment for the teacher educators to visit the schools and observe the B.Ed. students. Each student was to be visited and observed three times by three different staff members at regular intervals.

On the allotted day, the teacher educator observed and assessed the students’ in-depth subject knowledge, involvement in classroom activities, communication skills, implementation of innovative teaching methods, preparation of teaching-learning materials, participation in school activities, time management and overall teaching competency.

On Saturdays, the students came to the college campus to put forward their doubts and on the same day, their teacher educators provided proper clarification.

Supervision of the School Headmasters/ Principals

The school Headmasters/Principals checked the regular presence of the students by signing their attendance in both the morning and evening sessions. They also examined the teaching competency of the students by observing their classes and provided feedback, which emphasized aspects such as regularity, punctuality, content preparation, interaction with students and cooperation with mentors to enhance teaching skills.

The Headmasters also encouraged the students to take part in curricular and co-curricular activities such as quizzes, exhibitions, oratorical competitions, drawing, dance, drama, mime, PTA meetings, NSS and Guide and Scout activities. Students were also involved in assembly activities and celebrations organized by the school.

If the Headmasters noticed any inconvenience faced by the students, they informed the college and the teacher educators took the necessary actions to resolve the issues.

Guidance of the Mentors in Schools

On the very first day of the internship, mentors were allotted to the B.Ed. students by the Headmaster. The mentors shared their timetables with the trainees and allowed them to observe their classes for the first ten days to learn how to motivate students, present content, ask questions, interact, maintain discipline, assign work and so on.

The mentors also observed the teaching competency of the students to assess their use of innovative teaching methods and effectiveness in presenting content. They provided immediate feedback to help mould the trainees into full-fledged teachers.

Flexible Approach by the Peers

A separate assessment sheet was provided to all the students to observe the classes of their peers. They were instructed to give their opinions and suggestions both orally and in written form.

Self Evaluation

The self-appraisal form helps students categorize their language proficiency, communication skills, teaching competency, flexibility and academic excellence.
